Orange Lawn Tennis Club Restaurant K

Hiding in plain sight and using the enigmatic title “Restaurant K” is one of New Jersey’s finest dining establishments. Actually this is the best restaurant in the state of New Jersey. Period. No competition. Why is it hard to find?

Restaurant K is the food service arm of the Orange Lawn Tennis Club in South Orange, New Jersey. But you don’t have to have a tennis membership to join. You can join the dining club for a mere $10. A year. Put your credit card on file and you’re ready to enjoy some of the best food in the whole state – and maybe a few other states as well.

The brain child of Chef Richard Krug and his gifted wife Mimi, Restaurant K is open every weekend. Make reservations and prepare to be amazed. From a party of 2 to 20, you can experience fine dining the way it was meant to be.

The restaurant is located in the historic Redmond Estate Mansion and surrounded by 13 green acres as well as those enviable tennis courts. Chef Krug is a CIA graduate, and has plied his trade at venerable establishments including New York’s Oyster Bar, Lorena’s in Maplewood and other notable venues.

The night we ate there, I chose the Foie Gras to start then the Branzino for the main course. That branzino was not only beautiful to look at, the flavor was simply amazing.

But Mimi made a wonderful suggestion. Instead of my usual Manhattan, why not try their special made with plum bitters. Wow. That was delicious. They also have an amazing wine selection, curated by Hank Zona, who offers “The Corkside Club” and wine and cheese special events here.

As I’m wont to say, living in the South Orange/Maplewood crack in the world is a privilege beyond description. The two towns are loaded with people who work in the arts, everything from theater folk, to musicians, to writers and artists and to think we have this stupendous dining establishment here.

And when I tell you the price you will be really floored. The Prix Fixe two course dinner runs $35. + booze.
Call them today. Make a reservation to start your New Year’s off right.
