Mourning Doves

By on April 3, 2019

A Pair of Mourning Doves has moved into my apple tree.

And that tree is right outside my office window.

Which means that for every moment

I am sitting at my desk,

the gentle sound of those doves is here:

to comfort me, to secure me, to take me back

to my Kansas visits to my grandmother’s house on the ranch.

Where a pair of mourning doves serenaded me for all those long weeks

when I stayed there,

just waiting to go home.

Because, having the doves, meant that the world was all connected

and when I took the train to go back home to Texas,

I could be sure the doves would fly along as well.

So that when I got back into my own bed

in my own bedroom,

in Texas,

those doves would be there, saying,

“Welcome home.”

And now they are here.
